MSN messenger is a freeware instant messaging program that was developed and offered
by Microsoft for computers having the Microsoft Windows operating system. This service
enables users to send instant messages to friends, family and colleagues. In February
2006, MSN Messenger was then renamed Windows Live Messenger as part of Microsoft's
Windows Live series of online services and software. The service offers more than just
simple sending of instant messages online. It also includes support for voice conversations,
video conversations via webcam, sharing files with friends and online games as well. MSN
Messenger also has added features such as the well-loved smileys, winks, animated display
pictures, styled text, and a lot more. A user can even send instant messages to
somebody’s mobile phone, call their phones and even their PC’s. Being able to call phones
is a pay service provided by Verizon Web Calling Service done for Microsoft. One of the
newest features though is having the way to connect with Yahoo! contacts. A user can
freely add a friend or colleague having a Yahoo account with the new Windows Live
Messenger.

Downloading the service is available on the web for free. The system
requirements a user needs will depend on the version that he wants for his computer.
Taking the latest Windows Live Messenger (MSN Messenger) as an example, it needs
Microsoft Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system, a Multimedia PC Pentium 233
MHz process (500 MHz recommended) for the computer and processor, up to 50 MB of
hard disk space for installation while 15 MB to run the program, a minimum memory of MB
of RAM (256 MB recommended), a display of a minimum 800 x 600 screen resolution,
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6 SP1 (not necessary to be the default browser), and a
dial-up or broadband internet connection. The download time depends on the
connectivity of the computer a person is using.
